Most farm families receive their health insurance from an off-farm job, according to USDA. Without a family member seeking outside employment, coverage would not be affordable in many cases.

Iowa’s largest farmer-owned collective, Landus, has announced a new initiative to offer farmer-focused health coverage through Landus Health and Conduit Health. Policies are provided through Momentum Ag, a division of Patriot Growth Insurance Services, and plans use the Cigna nationwide provider network.

There are four different plans available, with varying deductibles and maximum out-of-pocket amount, and all are designed to avoid the large out-of-pocket healthcare expenses found in other plans, according to an announcement from Landus. Each plan is offered for an individual, individual plus spouse, individual plus children, or family.

Those who apply take a health questionnaire, then are given individualized pricing based on their answers. For an average 45-year-old man, one-person coverage ranges from $509.65 to $764.55 and family coverage ranges from $1,464.93 to $2,214.11 per month. The least expensive option has the same deductible and maximum out-of-pocket: $7,350 single/$14,700 family. The most expensive has a $1,000 single/$2,000 family deductible and $5,000 single/$10,000 family maximum out-of-pocket.

The company says comprehensive coverage will include no-cost preventative and telemedicine appointments and offers care coordination and disease management for chronic conditions.

Those enrolled will receive a TytoCare kit, which includes tools such as a stethoscope, thermometer, and special digital camera that allows healthcare providers to remotely examine patients.

“We listened to our farmers. There have not been affordable health coverage options out there for them without a member of their family finding a job away from the farm. Landus Health and Conduit Health will change that,” said Matt Carstens, Landus and Conduit president and CEO.
