Over the past year, it has been exceptionally challenging to engage the public with topics such as ancient pottery shards, artifacts, and distant history while Israel faced an existential threat. Archaeology is often seen as a luxury reserved for times of peace. However, in Israel, the study of archaeology can be just as crucial as matters of security. Yigal Allon famously stated: “A nation that doesn’t respect its past is destined to have a meager present and an uncertain future.”

Now, more than a year since the war began, it seems the existential threat to the State of Israel is behind us. Yet, the Temple Mount Sifting Project is now facing its own existential threat. Donations to the project have decreased by approximately 70%, and government funding processes have been frozen. These challenges, combined with a decline in the number of visitors to the sifting site, have forced us to significantly scale back our activities. Regrettably, unless new funding is secured, we will have to limit our operations at the sifting site starting in January 2025.

Since 2004, the efforts involving the soil from the Temple Mount—including sifting, sorting, documentation, research, and publication—have relied on the dedication of countless individuals. At the forefront are the hundreds of thousands of people who participated in the sifting process, alongside our staff, volunteers, and visitors who have contributed their time, energy, and resources. This work has also been sustained by the many friends of the project whose generous contributions have made it possible to uncover and preserve our shared history.

Ideally, this critical task should have been undertaken and funded by the state, which bore responsibility for preventing the archaeological devastation that left us with thousands of tons of soil to sift through today. Yet it has been the general public that stepped up to shoulder this responsibility, recognizing the importance of this work for Israel and the world.

To date, approximately 90% of the soil has been sifted. Were it not for the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war, we might have already completed this phase of the project. A well-known phenomenon in archaeology is that the most significant discovery often emerges on the very last day of excavation. Who knows what treasures still lie hidden in the remaining soil?

Beyond completing the sifting, there is still an enormous task ahead: processing, analyzing, and publishing the artifacts for scientific and historical purposes. To date, only about 15% of this work has been completed. Without the necessary resources, these artifacts risk being forgotten—left in storage as though they were never uncovered.

We appeal to you to join us in supporting this vital endeavor. Your contributions will help us ensure that, as Psalm 85:12 states, “truth springs from the earth.” Together, we can safeguard the invaluable historical heritage unearthed by this project and ensure these discoveries receive the attention and recognition they deserve.

Thank you for standing with us.
