AEYE Health has created an AI screening system for an array of eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and AMD without requiring the knowledge or training of an ophthalmologist.

All people with diabetes – some 40M people in the US alone – are at risk of diabetic retinopathy, which is the top cause of blindness in the working-age population. The disease can be treated, and blindness can be fully prevented if it is detected early. Diabetics should be screened annually but due to a shortage of ophthalmologists, high cost, and lack of access, only 25% of those who need it receive the screening.

AEYE Health is a Tel Aviv and New York-based startup that has developed a fully autonomous AI-based diagnostic screening technology for retinal imaging. The company also plans to launch its comprehensive screening platform that currently diagnoses more than 20 eye and systemic indications, including hypertension, cardiovascular risk and dementia.

Instead of needing an annual appointment with an ophthalmologist for screening, patients receive initial screening from their primary care physicians, endocrinologist or at retail pharmacies. Only patients for which the AI system detects potential disease need to be referred to a specialist.

A billable CPT code already exists for AI-based diabetic retinopathy screening, enabling physicians and other health care providers to generate additional revenue while protecting the vision of their patients.
