The new engine keeps a plane airborne for 6-15 minutes after its regular engine stops working.

6-15 minutes can be a very long time, especially if you are sitting in a light aircraft when the engine stops working. Israel Military Industries Ltd. (IMI Systems) subsidiary Ashot Ashkelon Industries Ltd. (TASE: ASHO) will display a new hybrid engine at the Paris Air Show designed to provide up to 15 minutes of extra time to a pilot whose engine has stopped functioning.

During this time, when the light airplane is still in a horizontal position, the pilot is able to perform several essential actions that can save his life, other than shouting to the control tower that he is in trouble. Ashot Ashkelon's system, called HYSKY 60, is a hybrid propulsion system designed to bolster the safety of civilian aircraft. It is adapted for light aircraft weighing up to 600 kilograms.

The system goes into action as soon as the main engine stops working, and operates as an electric motor. The system is also able at the same time to operate in tandem with the aircraft's regular engine, thereby adding additional power that makes it easier for the pilot to take off. The hybrid system weighs 20 kilograms.

Italian companies Efesto, which specializes in the development and production of electronic control systems, and CFM Air, which specializes in the development and production of light aircraft, were partners in developing the HYSKY 60.
