REAPER (Boston Underworld Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 6,899 ratings

He’s dark and mysterious. Quiet and lethal. Pure sin wrapped up in a beautiful package.
But there’s also something off about him.
He doesn’t feel anything. He shows no emotions.
Sometimes, I question his humanity.
He hasn’t spoken to me in two years. Not a single word.
But we share a secret, he and I.
And if it ever comes out, I have no doubt in my mind…
He won’t have a problem killing me too.

***

I’ve slain for her. I’ll do it again.
When it comes to Sasha, there isn’t a line I won’t cross.
I watch her. She doesn’t know it.
She thinks I hate her. Sometimes, I think I might too.
But I’m always there, lurking in the shadows.
Craving her. Trying to keep the beast within at bay.
I’ll keep her safe. I’ll slaughter anyone who tries to hurt her.
The only thing I can’t do… is protect her from myself.

A fascinating and dark tale
5 out of 5 stars
A fascinating and dark tale
Dark and dangerous. Spicy and soothing. Tormented and calm. These are just a few catchphrases to describe The Reaper. Zavarelli has a way of drawing the reader into a world fraught with danger, secrets, and horrors the human eye is not used to witnessing. We are taught as law abiding citizens to fear the mob and to stay far away from them. But these tales bring you in and leave you craving the syndicate. The Reaper is a tale of two characters, one who is all darkness and broody and the other is light and hopeful. But just remember, there is no darkness without the light and there is no light without the darkness. Phenomenal tale! I received the ARC in exchange for an honest review. My honest opinion is you will want and crave this book.

4.5 "Raised to Kill but Healed by Love!" Stars for the story and narration!

Another winner by the author/narrator combo team of A Zavarelli and Tracy Marks. Boy do I love these Irish mafia bad boys and the women who steal their hearts. This is my third book (I listened to them a bit out of order with book 4, first, and then books 1 and 2 in the series), and each one has been unique and yet contains an equally lovable, loyal, and very alpha protective hero. Interestingly, the one point where this book differs from the others is that this heroine is not a tough as nails fighter herself. Instead, we are treated to an Irish mafia romance where the hero comes in to save the damsel in distress--which had an equally satisfying appeal in the end while keeping the story line fresh. Moreover, Ms. Marks' splendid narration makes this a must listen to title.

This is Ronan's and Sasha's story. Ronan was raised to be a killer. At the tender age of 8, he was full-time raised in a training camp for soldiers. The horrors he endured, including incredible amounts of torture and being forced to kill or be killed, have undoubtedly affected him. Today, he is a man who can't stand to be touched (a factor that his brothers in the Boston Irish mafia understand and protect) and shows no emotion. Additionally, having been raised to take orders, he is a man that needs routine in an almost OCD kind of way. As a result, he is in his late twenties and has never been with a woman--well except for the one that he shared one night with 2 years ago and who he has been watching ever since, even if he hasn't spoken a word to her.

Sasha is a good, sweet girl even if she has been forced into being a dancer at the Irish mobster's bar to help make ends meet now that her mother is dying of cancer. She also takes care of her mother, hoping to shield her sister from this burden. Sasha is fascinated by Ronan: the man who thinks he clandestinely watches her and the man who saved her life and whom she shares a big secret with. But due to that same secret she is also a victim to another brutal man, one who makes her do things for him that she wishes she could wash away.

Once Ronan figures out that Sasha is being hurt, he does the thing he has been programmed to do: destroy. But what will become of her then? Sasha is determined to get away from the mafia life (a plan that the leader of the Irish mob has green lighted), and Ronan is incapable of feeling or being touched and hasn't talked to her in 2 years. With all these impediments in the way, could there possibly be a HEA for this couple?

Tracy Marks delivers another stunning narration in Reaper. I love how Ms. Marks is able to create authentic Boston, Irish, and Russian accents which really lend credibility and help bring this story to life. Ms. Marks is also equally talented in delivering male voices as she is in the female ones. Moreover, she ensures that each is distinguishable from any other, so that the listener can easily tell who is talking just from her voice.

Ms. Marks also has a great handle on the pacing of the scenes--matching her tone and speed to the mood being enacted. This made it very easy to just sit back ad enjoy the Ronan's and Sasha's story while at the same time feeling the emotions playing out in the particular scene.

All in all, the Boston Underworld Series is one not to be missed by mafia romance lovers. Each of the three books I've listened to so far have been enjoyable, intriguing, and filled with heat and a genuine connection between the characters. Now I can't wait to finish this series by listening to the last book I have yet to listen to: Ghost (Alexei and Talia's story!).

I'm rounding up. I loved Crow (Mack is amazing) but this one fell a little short. I liked the writing, I liked the story, and I loved Ronan, but there were just a few things that made the story drag for me. The first being Sasha. In the story she's a lost character and she even states that she's lived a lie and has surrounded herself with so many lies that she doesn't know who she is. The thing is she never finds herself either. The core of herself is her obsession for Ronan. The reader is told of the sacrifices she's made, but everything revolves around Ronan. She makes plans for herself and she always gives them up for a man. What does...what will she do with herself all day long while Ronan is "working". She has no goals and no dreams for herself and to me that is sad to be so completely dependent on a man. Her drawing is mentioned a time or two and her math abilities but it's so far in the periphery that those personality traits seem tacked on to make her more interesting. The second is that I'm not a fan of 1st person pov because as in this case the story can get mired in the character's thoughts and when you really cut it down there is very little interaction between the h/H and other characters and lots of times this point of view turns into a lot of telling instead of showing. Those two things aside, I enjoyed the story itself and in particular Ronan. Every mention of his soft brown eyes broke my heart. What a fascinating and complex character he is and his horrific upbringing completely made my heart hurt for him. Despite being a dark hero he was sympathetic. The side story of the syndicate progresses nicely and sets up for the next story which I plan on reading immediately.

Wow!! Well, that was an interesting experience. The Irish Mob sure do look a wee bit different to the Irish mob of blokes I’ve met up till now. My encounters with anyone from Ireland so far includes the “to be sure, to be sure” variety, not the “I’ll blow your bleedin brains” type. I’ve even been to Ireland and stayed in a relative’s rundown castle (which was bloody cold) and managed to avoid any scary types. The scariest things I experienced in Ireland was their driving and maybe overdosing on potatoes. Fried potatoes for breakfast, chips for lunch and roast potatoes for dinner. I like potatoes, but not to eat them at breakfast lunch and dinner. So, to meet the mob and see this side of Ireland was a real eye-opener.

The audio of Reaper was everything I thought it would be and more. I was sitting on the train listening to some pretty horrific scenes practically hunched up in a ball. I was seriously freaked out to the extent that I was looking around waiting for a knife or gun to be pulled out by someone around me. The narrator, Tracy Marks, does an awesome job of grabbing your attention and making you feel like you’re part of the scene. I think I was mostly affected by the violence more than anything. The sexy times were frequent but to be honest, listening to them on audio is way different to reading them. For one, I don’t normally have an audience when I start to get twitchy. Secondly, I’m still convinced everyone around me can overhear it, so I’m forever turning the volume up and down depending on the level of profanity. When it comes to the accents, I felt that the narrator did a really good job. It’s hard enough to do accents let alone change from a male to a female character. I’m adding Tracy Marks to my favourite narrator's list. Not necessarily for her voice but because she brings emotion and feeling to the characters that other narrators just can’t do as well.

Storyline…I knew after reading Crow that this book was going to be very, very interesting. Poor bloody Ronan. That man…I just wanted…I just needed to give him a hug. The horrors he faced and lived through were unbelievable. No child should have seen let alone lived through that. It bloody scares me that children are used in this way, but then again we know, not just in Ireland but worldwide there are children being used and abused. I’m glad that Ronan and his Mum were there for him in the end.

I really want to think that this is all from the author’s imagination, but to some extent, I could imagine it to be real. Even though I mentioned I’ve only met the “to be sure, to be sure” Irish, I know there are the “I’ll blow your bleedin brains” too. I remember the news reports of bombings and violent protests. We heard U2 sing about Sunday, bloody Sunday and saw movies like In The Name of the Father. Innocent people die and there’s always the wrongly accused fighting to be heard. So, I knew that Ireland isn’t just four leaf clovers and leprechauns, but it still shocked me to see this side of Ireland.

Sasha has had a hard life. Her mother is dying of cancer and she’s the only one available to financially support her. Sasha’s dad is dead and her sister is in another state studying. Sasha doesn’t want this life for her sister so tries to shield her as much as possible. Look, I felt sorry for Sasha, but I definitely felt that she brought some of her problems on herself. Yes, I’m quick to judge, but she seemed to just keep falling into the same traps over and over again.

The relationship between Ronan and Sasha is a little strange. Ronan is obsessed with her and even though Sasha knows it, she doesn’t know the extent he has gone to and will go to, to protect her. It’s a little…no, probably more accurate to say a lot unhealthy the way the relationship starts, but you always know there’s something different about Ronan. Ronan’s past has made him unable to have normal relationships. He doesn’t recognise love, is uncomfortable being touched and generally only knows violence. Sasha knows all of this but refuses to see just this. She wants what’s underneath. She wants to push past his vulnerable shell and bring him out just for her. Ronan does eventually come out of his shell…just because it’s what Sasha wants.

I really enjoyed the audio of Reaper. The author drags you into the seedier, violent side of the Boston Underworld and takes you for a ride. This series is awesome and I can’t wait to meet more of these crazy Irish Mobsters.
